How to plan a successful bedroom project.

February is officially the month of love and, while we know that showing affection and appreciation to the people in your life is important, use the month to breathe a little emotion and devotion into your spaces!

Bedrooms are the focus this month as they are places where we should find comfort, relaxation, and warmth, especially in the winter months. But because they aren’t as visible to guests, they become spaces for latchkey style, terrible flow, and no tranquility.

We believe everyone deserves a bedroom that is welcoming and relaxing.

This is why we’re focusing on taking those dreams you have of

creating a breathtaking boudoir and sharing our tips to make it a reality.

Whether you’re looking for a new design or simply a refreshed makeover, we’re giving you the inside scoop to make you

fall in love.

FUNCTION AND FLOW

When designing a bedroom, we always start with the layout: what are the daily rituals, how will it flow, how much storage is required and how do the homeowners feel about their bedrooms.

The layout of your bedroom is not only determined by your furniture placement but any built-in features, like closets and windows, as well. The layout should be practical and functional, with enough space for movement and storage of all your items. Storage options are another important aspect of functionality.

A bedroom should have ample storage space for clothing, personal items, and other belongings. You could use a combination of built-in closets, dressers, and storage benches, as well as additional storage solutions such as under-bed storage or hanging organizers.

The flow of the space is also important to consider. Of course, the bedroom should have a clear and logical flow, with easy access to all necessary areas, such as the bed, closet, and windows.

Finally, think about how you use your bedroom and what other needs does it fulfill? For example, would you like a make-up vanity or a reading nook, a quiet workspace or a space to lay down your yoga mat. Maybe you'd like to unwind in your bedroom with a fireplace and a mini beverage station.

STYLE AND AESTHETICS

  • Sustainable: This trend is focused on using eco-friendly materials in bedroom design, such as bamboo, cork, and reclaimed wood. This trend is not only good for the environment, but it also creates a unique and rustic look in the bedroom.
  • Personalized and Customized: Not so much a trend, this is why most of our clients choose to work with us because we can help them design a bedroom that truly reflects their personal style and preferences. It's about creating a space that is truly unique, and that feels like a reflection of the person who lives there.

PRO TIP: We ask our clients to put together a dream board by tearing up pages from their favorite design magazine or going online and creating an online dream folder.

LIGHTING AND LUMENS

Finally, lighting is the most overlooked yet essential aspect of designing a bedroom makeover.
Here are some examples of types of lighting in a bedroom:
  • Ambient Lighting: refers to the general or overall lighting of a space. It is used to provide a soft and even illumination throughout the room. Examples of ambient lighting include ceiling lights, recessed lights, and wall sconces.
  • Task Lighting: used to provide focused and bright light for specific tasks, such as reading, writing, or applying makeup. Examples of task lighting include table lamps, floor lamps, and reading lights.
  • Accent Lighting: used to highlight specific areas or features in the room, such as artwork, photographs, or architectural elements. Examples of accent lighting include track lighting, picture lights, and under-cabinet lighting.
  • Mood Lighting: used to create a specific ambiance or feeling in the room, such as romance, relaxation, or coziness. Examples of mood lighting include dimmer switches, color-changing bulbs, and candles.

PRO TIP: When working with an interior designer, make sure you request a lighting plan that satisfies your needs and use of your space.

LIGHTING AND LUMENS

When designing a bedroom, think about where you'll need light in the room, such as over the bed or reading nook, and choose lighting fixtures accordingly. You can mix and match different lighting types to create the perfect ambiance for your bedroom.

For example, ambient lighting can be used as the primary source of light in the room, while task lighting can be used for reading and accent lighting can be used to highlight artwork. And mood lighting can be used for special occasions.

It's also important to consider the brightness and color temperature of the light when selecting light fixtures. Brightness is measured in lumens, and color temperature is measured in Kelvin. Generally, a higher color temperature (5000K-6500K) is better for task lighting, while a lower color temperature (2700K-3000K) is better for ambient lighting.
