I love Christmas!
Every year, I look forward to the annual shop trek to check out the new ornaments, ribbons and styles. I can get lost for hours analyzing the new colors, textures and how to incorporate everything into my existing collection.
But it can all get pretty confusing and expensive. Confusing because sometimes there is too much and it can become an overwhelming experience. It can get expensive, unless you have a base layer of ornaments and you add something every year.
Finally, you want to have some fun. Get creative. Buck the trend and show your personality.
Which is why I am happy to share the biggest Tips for Holiday Décor to make your holiday season a memorable one.
Tip #1
DECORATING THE CHRISTMAS TREE
Whether you are using a fresh tree or artificial, make sure you tuck lights way back into the tree, all the way to the center, nestling them from the inside to the outside and back in again.
Take a little extra time to hide the wires, tucking loops through branches. This will not only make things look tidy, but safe from pets and little ones.
Next, hang shiny ball ornaments deep inside the tree—they will reflect the lights and multiply their effect.
Get extra boxes of plain shiny balls (they don't have to be fancy, cheap and cheerful will do), and after you put on the lights, hang the balls deep inside the tree.
Always use more lights than you think you need!
Tip #2
Whether hung on archways, front door or draped over your stairway banister garlands add warmth. For a more luxurious look, try doubling or tripling ropes of garland over the stairways; one strand is always too thin and looks skimpy. You can also mix different garlands to weave in textures and add more layers. You can also weave in a fake strand of garland with fresh greens.
Don't be afraid to mix and match your materials. Add wide mesh ribbon to your tree to fill in empty spots. Loop it around for dimension and a more curated look.
Tip #3
Fireplaces are one of the most fun places to dress up for the holidays. You can use a smaller version of the garland on the mantel for a continuous look.
Alternatively, you can use leftover branches cut from the bottom of your Christmas tree, or cuttings and from other evergreens outside. Use them with other greens and branches of berries and bittersweet.
There are always leftover pieces of greenery lying around, and they all find their way into the fireplace arrangements.
Use the same ribbon and mesh on your fireplace mantle. This creates a harmonious look because all decorated elements have something in common.
Tip #4
All glitter is not the same. Look for ultra-fine or extra-fine glitter from specialty craft stores. It's sparkly and doesn’t look like an elementary school project.
Word of caution: A little bit of glitter can go a long way.
And while you can paint anything (think pine cones, twigs, branches, dried pomegranates, artichokes,
seed pods) – less is more.
Tip #5
The holidays is the time to do something unique. Small topiaries, mini-wreaths and festive potted plants on your table make a striking impression and last much longer than fresh-cut flowers. Incorporate ornaments and decorative garlands to your tablescape. It's whimsical and unexpected.
