Whether you have already started your remodel project or are in the process of signing on the dotted line, here are some ways to save your hard earned cash and still create a home that you will love for years to come.
Examine The Layout
As the saying goes, “measure twice, cut once”. If you want to avoid expensive mistakes, start with the layout and make sure it’s as lean as possible.
Often we see an idea in a showroom or trade show, which may not be the best solution for your space. Or sometimes, there’s a missed opportunity to add an element that clients miss completely.
Ask your design professional for suggestions and opinions as to what might work before you get your heart set on a layout. If budget is tight, and let’s face it, it usually is, then I would encourage you to get a couple of designers to review it. You may have to pay for their time, but it will be worth it in the end.
Keep The Structure
Moving pipes, electrical and working against the joist are all do-able and any contractor worth their worth will tell you that it is possible.
But that doesn’t mean that it won’t cost you extra.
Moving pipes can be pricey and is often unnecessary. However, know this: changing plumbing in a room can significantly increase the cost of a renovation.
But if your heart is set on a specific layout which may require some extra work, consult with a designer first to see if there are other alternative solutions that they can suggest.
Choose Cost-Effective Materials
Cost of fixtures, tiles, flooring and lighting can add up quickly. But they also have the biggest selection, meaning you can pretty much satisfy any budget level.
You can easily swap a good-quality porcelain tiles instead of granite or marble, and get similar results. Instead of hardwood flooring, consider engineered laminates or even faux-wood tiles.
Lights often get neglected, especially when clients are looking to save dollars on a full design project, but they make a big impact to the final effect.
Use good-quality LED pot lights and finish the space with some accent pieces. They may cost a little more initially, but you will end up saving in the long run.
Revise your timelines
A full remodel project can take weeks, if not months to complete. And it usually involves several phases from planning to completion.
When done correctly, clients can save hundreds, or thousands in project costs. Things like ordering materials in advance and scheduling all the trades in the right order can help the bottom line and your bank account.
You’ll reduce your expenses simply by organizing when the plumber, electrician, millworker, painter show up on-site. And it will ensure that the project is moving along at a reasonable pace.
There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing a remodel project left unattended with no one working on-site. It's like watching your money fly out the window.
Hire a Design Professional
If you’re on a budget, it can be tempting to go it alone. Planning everything yourself can be tricky and can end up costing you more money, time and happiness.
Find a design professional that works independently of a showroom or a retail store so that they are free to offer you solutions from a variety of suppliers, not just the ones that employ them.
A designer also comes with their own network and list of contacts that translate into additional savings by way of discounts, favors and preferential access that consumers don’t have.
This can result in huge cost savings for your project while giving you the “designer look” that will make your space even more
enjoyable.
